What is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and how can it protect my intellectual property?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act gives you specific rights as the registered owner of intellectual property. In the past it was up to you, the owner of the content, to track down and convince the infringer to remove the stolen content, and then convince the court of the amount of damages incurred. The Digital Millennium Act was created to resolve this problem, making it easier for you to recoup damages.

If the infringer and/or the infringers ISP does not send you a "Dispute Notification," or take the stolen material down from the web site within a "reasonable amount of time," the ISP becomes jointly liable for the damages. If the correct steps are performed properly, the minimum damages assessed for a "willful infringer" is $5,000.00, with a maximum fine of $150,000.00 per infringement!

Report copyright infringements to The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (NIPRCC).
